Born to be Bound by Addison Cain, book #1 of the “Alpha’s Claim Series,” was the book that popped my Omegaverse cherry, and oh, what an experience!
It’s set in a dome in a city called Thólos that has just been taken over by the city’s most dangerous inmates. The dome is in straight chaos when Claire, our featured heroine, and omega volunteers go into the city’s citadel, a veritable Wolf’s den, to beg for food for herself and fellow starving omegas. Wrapped in the clothes of corpses to try to cover her scent, Claire waits to gain the attention of the massive Alpha in charge, a man called ‘The Shepard.’ At first you’re not really certain what’s happening, but the gravity of Claire’s situation is enough to drag you into the story by your nose.
Claire, who has lead a life of celibacy, choosing to forgo mating with any Alpha in her time of need, finds herself surrounded by Alphas when the worst thing imaginable happens…her heat-suppressing pills fail her. Faced with the rape of hordes of loose inmates, she finds herself carried off by the very man who set them free, Shepard.
Shepard takes Claire and forces a pair bond on her. He’s the Alpha you want to hate, but somehow can’t. His actions are morally questionable, and his control over Claire and the city at large seems like the work of a psycho with a god complex. I spent much of the first part of the book trying to figure out what his deal was. Cain does a beautiful job of dropping little clues for you that maybe Shepard isn’t quite what he seems.
All poor Claire knows is that her people are starving and now she’s the captive of the man who would see them bound to the same fate as she is if she doesn’t get free. Claire is a selfless and brave heroine, no matter her fear, and that’s just how I like them.
This is a fast-paced book with a ton of X-rated sex, grit and brutality, and a hell of a lot of great, suspenseful plot. If that’s your thing, then I promise you, this series will have you clicking the buy button for the next book in the series before you can say ‘orgasm.’ It’s one hell of an emotional ride.
